NYS FIELD HOCKEY: VESTAL CONTROLS IROQUOIS, CLINCHES SECOND STRAIGHT CLASS B STATE TITLE (2023-11-12)

Coming off a tough battle in Saturday's semifinal, the Vestal Golden Bears put a stamp on another state championship in Sunday's Class B final. A 4-1 margin marked the program's second straight state title, taking down Iroquois of Section VI.
Vestal earned a penalty corner early and Adrienne Mayes put a drive on goal that Meredith Ryan tipped in 2:30 into the game.
The Golden Bears struck again with a minute left in the first period. Hailey Carey lasered a shot on goal that Helene Ryan redirected for the second goal.
Vestal expanded its lead in the second period after Aubree Wenner capitalized on a hard drive from Mayes.
Another penalty corner preceded the final Vestal goal in the third period. This time, Mayes connected on a reverse drive off an assist from Aubree Wenner.
Goalkeeper Reilly Storer tallied four saves and conceded only one goal.
Head coach Vickie Sax praised her team's efforts throughout the weekend.
"The team played so passionately this weekend," Sax said. "Played as a team. Believed in what they could accomplish. And, executed the game plan."
Sax also pointed to the importance of her seniors, seven of whom plan to play in college.
These 10 seniors have been with me since seventh grade," Sax said. "(I'm) So happy for their ownership in the success. Their back-to-back championship state titles have elevated their confidence and will bring competitiveness to their future college team."
